Valley’s Best Kept Real Estate Secret
My family moved to Arizona in the early 1980’s and we settled in the South Mountain area of South Phoenix. I think this area of town is the valley’s best kept real estate secret.
I grew up here, went to school here. When I graduated from South Mountain High School, I took advantage of my Regents scholarship and attended Arizona State University. But still lived in South Mountain, I just drove to school each day.
I love that this part of town is right in the middle of it all. Whether I need to head east, west, north or south, my drive isn’t very long. The airport is just a short drive away, too.
Downtown Phoenix is just minutes from here and both areas are still seeing a lot of growth, a lot of infill projects, renovations. You name it, it’s happening here in South Mountain.
Compared to other large cities in our country, Phoenix maintains a relatively low cost of living. Our area is not prone to earthquakes, tornadoes, or hurricanes. Nor do we get paralyzing snow storms during the winter time.
The trade-off is a summer time that can feel like your skin will be melting off because it’s so hot. But, I will gladly take that versus a high of 12 degrees during the day and having to be weighed down by layers and layers of clothes.
The South Mountain area is geographically bound by 48th street on the east end. The west end borders another great location, Laveen. Parts of Laveen have been annexed to Phoenix, so the geographic boundary runs along 27th avenue when you’re closer to the mountain, but then around 35th avenue as you head north towards the river bed. The northern boundary is the Salt River Bed, the southern boundary is South Mountain Park.
